 2017 Preview 


       Sand Rock completed the 2016 season with a 9-3 record. With their 6-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 2A region six, the Wildcats earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Sand Rock reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Tanner by a score of 49-14.

       The Wildcats won as many games as in any season since 2008. It marked the first time since the 2013 season that the Wildcats qualified for the playoffs.

       Since 2010, Sand Rock has gone a combined 44-31. Their 59.0% winning percentage ranks 15th in Class 2A over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Sand Rock has managed to compile a record of 172-105. Their 62.0% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 2A and 77th in the AHSAA. The Wildcats have been successful on the football field with twenty-two winning seasons during this time.

       The Wildcats are led by head coach Steven Chesnut who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 16-6 over the past two seasons at Sand Rock. Under his direction the Wildcats have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Chesnut.

       Coach Chesnut's overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 16-6 (72.7%).

       The Sand Rock Wildcats will play in Class 2A region six during the 2017 season.

       The Wildcats should be in contention for a playoff spot in region six this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game.

       The Wildcats open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Plainview on Friday, September 1 at Russell Jacoway Stadium. Last year the Plainview Bears finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in third place in Class 3A region seven. The Bears lost in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs to Colbert County by a score of 31-20.

       Sand Rock and Plainview have met a total of 18 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 4-14-0 record against the Bears. They last met in 2016 with Plainview winning by a score of 30-7.

       Sand Rock returns 2A All-State Senior punter Carson Carver. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.

The Super 6 State Championships began in 1996. Since then all title games were played at Legion Field in Birmingham until 2009.
